TAUMARUNUI NEWS
The fortnightly meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. C. A. Boles. It was resolved to refuse a request for permission to erect an advertising sign in Morero Terrace, on the grounds that it clashed with the town-planning requirements. It was decided to approve of the electrical engineer preparing a new schedule of electricity charges for consideration cf the council. The Kaitieke Dairy Company, Ltd., wrote declining to accept the revised schedule of electricity charges for current supplied to it, and the council decided to inform the company that the transformer woul.fl be removed within 28 days.
The Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club conducted a well-patronised shoot, but the showery weather was not conducive to good marksmanship. Results: Seven-bisd match: W. Peek, 20yds., six birds, 1; E. Lightfoot, 15yds., 2. Seven-bird match: J. Wiske, 14yds., f> birds, 1; R. F. Harris. 14yds., 2. Fif-teen-bird match, for the Harris Cun: A. J. Richards, 13yds.. 13 birds, 1: TV. Peek, 21yds, and E. Lightfoot. 13yds, tied for second place. Five-bird
match: G. Bretherton, 17yds., A. J. Richards, 15yds., and E. Lightfoot, 15 yds., tied, Bretherton winning the shoot-off.
A party of 50 relief workers arrived in Taumarunui from Auckland on Thursday morning, and were later dispatched to the Ohura district. It is understood that another 50 will arrive at once, and will be transferred to the same area, there to be employed on road work.
The Taumarunui Winter Show Association has found it necessary, owing to the very rapid expansion of its annual exhibitions, to investigate possible avenues for financing the erection of its own buildings. The Borough Council has been approached for assistance, and has instructed its Finance and Legal Committee to prepare a report on the matter.
At a meeting of the executive of the Taumarunui Boxing Association, presided over by Mr. W. Johns, the following received medals won at the recent tournament:—Cadets: C. Bragge, Jack Johnston. N. R. McLeish and Pi! Davis. Schoolboys: Norman Robinson, Tom Treloar, F. Fraser and E. Lawler.
The association’s rules have considerably revised, and framed to govern the newly-establisn boxing school. The next tournarii«‘ was fixed for September 2.
