JUMP FROM TRAIN

WANTED MAN ESCAPES ESCORT ELUDED IN CROWD A prisoner under escort jumped from the Limited this morning just as the train was pulling into the Auckland Railway Station. Although the escorting constable

gave chase, his action was hindered by the big crowd on the platform, and the wanted man escaped into the city. The escaped prisoner, William Marryatt Ingram, had been arrested at Taihape on a false pretences charge and was being brought to Auckland to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning. He travelled with a constable as escort in a second-class carriage, which was filled with other passengers.

Just as the Limited was slowing down to run into the platform, most of the passengers rose and busied themselves with their luggage. Ingram rose, too, and before the constable could stop him, had moved in among the other passengers in the. car. Working his way quickly through the car, he made for the door, which he opened suddenly, closed it behind him, and jumped from the moving train. The platform at the station this morning was crowded with people who were waiting for friends on the Limited. There was also a large crowd of supporters to meet the Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates.

This was all to Ingram’s advantage. When he jumped from the train he must have dodged in among the crowd and made his way quickly out into the roadway among the waiting motorcars and taxis.

Ingram is 39 years of age and sft. liin. in height. He has a swarthy complexion, brown hair, grey eyes and scars on his nose, lower lip and left leg. The escaped man was wearing a grey suit, a shabby dark grey tweed overcoat, dark grey felt hat, a red silk scarf round his neck, and black shoes. Ingram has taken the names of Peterson and Margott at various stages of his career. He has worked as a labourer and a barman.

All police stations have been notified of his escape and a search is being made by the police throughout the city.
