BOY INJURED BY TRUCK

POINT CHEVALIER ACCIDENT STILL SERIOUSLY ILL Running out into the road to retrieve a football, Colin Laing, aged 10, whose father is an as-sistant-master at the Point Chevalier School, was knocked down by a motor-truck and seriously injured. In swerving to try to avoid him the truck overturned, but the driver was rrot hurt. The accident occurred in. Point Chevalier Road shortly after four o’clock yesterday afternoon. The boy, who had been playing football in the Walker Road Reserve, was on his way home with some other boys. They were handling the ball, which slipped from them and rolled into the road. Colin Laing ran after it fu::i into the path of a motor-lorry owned by Phillipps and Impey, Limited, which was being driven toward the Point by Mr. H. O. Caulton, of 44 Summer Street, Ponsonby. Mr. Caulton made an effort to avoid the boy and the truck swerved violently across the road and turned over on the unmetalled track between the concrete strips. The boy was caught by the bonnet of the truck and dragged several yards before the capsize occurred, receiving a fractured skull and many bruises. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital by a passing postal van and was still unconscious when admitted. His condition was serious and at midday today it was reported that, though an operation had been performed, he was still dangerously ill.
