LONG RECORD BROKEN

BEHAVED WELL FOR EIGHT YEARS His record of eight years’ good behaviour was shattered when Benjamin Campbell stood in the Police Court dock this morning charged with vagrancy. Campbell, aged 48, was said by SubInspector McCarthy to have a long list, though he had behaved well since 1921. “He does a little gardening about Newmarket,” added the subinspector. “He tells the tale that he has been walking a long way, and extracts sums of money from the householders, some of whom are frightened of him. He has been posing as a returned soldier. Campbell: I am a returned soldier. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., studying Campbell's list of previous convictions: You were in gaol in 1914, 1917, and 1919. The Sub-Inspector: Yes, you were working for his Majesty during most of the war years. “The sergeant at Newmarket says that Campbell is the pest of his neighbourhood,” observed the sub-inspector. “I will give him a chance,” commented the magistrate, “as he has not been here since 1921. If he starts this begging business again, bring him up immediately, and I will probably give him three months.”
