PENWOMEN’S LEAGUE | IMPROMPTU SPEAKING l ■ PRESENTATION TO BRIDE-ELECT Impromptu speaking formed part of the programme at Friday afternoon’s gathering of the New Zealand League of Penwomen at the. rooms in Anzac Avenue. The subjects which the debaters had to attack at a moment’s notice traversed a diversity of ideas, ranging from earthquakes to emotions, and from the moral censorship of books to the playing of bridge. Apt and spontaneous remarks were proffered by several members, who rose to the occasion with commendable directness, and entered with spirit and thoughtfulness into the different viewpoints of questions from humour to practicality. The social side of the afternoon had a pleasant aspect in the presentation of a line set of books to Miss Dorothy Griffiths, whose wedding takes place shortly. Mrs. Stuart Boyd, president of the league, spoke in laudatory terms of Miss Griffiths’s outstanding talents as an elocutionist, and referred to her vivacity and helpfulness as a league 'member. She assured the bride-elect of the goodwill and affection of all the members, and wished her every happiness and prosperity in her newlife. Miss Griffiths, who was wearing a jado green crepe de chine frock with felt hat in the same tones, made a charming littlo speech of thanks and appreciation. Mrs. Arthur Griffiths feelingly re-echoed her daughter’s acknowledgement of the members’ gracious act. A happy touch of sentiment was added in the reading of a poem by Mrs. Cluett (Isabel Maud Peacocke) written by her in honour of Miss Griffiths. A dainty tea was served, bowls of daffodils and violets adorning the table. Among those present were:— Airs. I. M.
