3—2—3 SCRUM PROVES FAILURE IN WELLINGTON

THE Petone Club, in Wellington, is the first Rugby club in New Zealand to adopt the 3-2-3 formation of the scrum, the innovation having been introduced by the team’s captain, Mark Nicholls, at the commencement of the present season. The change, however, has not been at all successful for various reasons. As far as the weight of the scrum was concerned the change has been entirely sat isfactory, M. Nicholls according to Nicholls, but until all the clubs adopt the same formation and adhere to the international rules which do not provide for a wingforward, he could not see how the formation could be successful. In fact, he added, his team had reverted to the 2-3-2 formation so popular in the Dominion, with the consequence that last Saturday it defeated Athletic, one of the leaders. Experts state that had Petone refrained from experimenting with its scrum the team would have been considerably higher on the ladder than fifth at the present time, as the individual members of the team are sufficient to warrant success. The indications are that Petone’s experiment will not be followed by any other teams, and most certainly not in Wellington.
