Ready for the Fray

RICHMOND—NORTH SHORE Clash at Carlaw Park LEAGUE fans at Carlaw Park tomorrow will be favoured with a plentiful supply of football fare, three senior Barnes being fixed to take place at the code’s headquarters. In the principal fixture of the day Shore will meet Richmond and, according to last Saturday’s matches, in which Richmond showed a marked improvement and Shore exhibited a form slightly below its usual standard, a hard, even game may be anticipated.

Richmond played good football early | in the season, but in quick succession i it lost many players with injuries, and j this left a weakened side, which met j with i number of reverses. Recently, j however, the youthful Richmond j Leaguers have been regaining their ! first of season form, and last Satur- ; day, although they failed to put Pon- | wnby away, they made a good show- i ing, and it is certainly on the cards that they will extend Shore. The curtain-raiser to the big game ! will be played between Ponsonby and Kingsland. On Xu. 2 ground, City meets Newton, and a fast open game —which may even rival the feature match in brilliance—can be well expected. Marist and Ellerslie will meet on the Domain. JUNIOR NOTES

The Akarana third intermediate team is at present holding a good position on the championship ladder, but according to the marked improvement shown by other teams in that grade, it will need to play a harder style of game and do more training in order to be there when the finals come along. Throughout the season Akarana has undoubtedly had bad luck, for a large number of its players have been on the injured list at various time, and nearly every Saturday it has taken the field with either one or two short. * * * For the past few weeks the Akarana third grade team has been without the

services of its skipper. It. Taylor. He injured his knee while playing, but it is expected that he will be ready to take the field again next Saturday. Although beaten by Kingsland last ; Saturday by 3 points to 2, Ponsonby ! third grade A is one of the most im- j proved sides in the competition. Kingsland third grade open has had two losses this season, and is at present lying second on the championship ladder with Ponsonby B. Maxwell, its crack fullback, has not been turning out lately. He was injured in a match against Richmond some weeks ago and is not ready to don the jersey again yet. Ilis place is being taken by Flay, who plays quite a good game. Kingsland has a solid threequarter line in Carter, Wilson and Welch. The last-named was a forward quite recently but was brought out of the pack to go on the wing, where he is making a good showing. Gloyne, who was once on the wing, has been made a forward and is certainly proving himself of more use to his side as ‘a packman than a rearguarder. Rush, who was regraded from senior B to third open, is undoubtedly a good, hard player, but as a halfback he spoils many fine moves by hanging on too much. Sixth B Grade Following is the position of the teams in the sixth B grade at the end of the first round:

CLINKER BUILT

NEW BOATS FOR SHORE CLUB The North Shore Rowing Club, at Devonport, has just landed the first clinker-built Towns boats to be ordered in New Zealand. Geo. Towns is well known in the Australian rowing world, but as a builder of craft ho has confined himself, hitherto, to best and best type boats. Two boats arrived from Sydney this week for the Shore Club and are being unpacked today. Great interest is being displayed by rowing men in the boats, which are for practice work only; the club has two more boats on order, making with one received last season five additional boats.
