HORTICULTURAL INSTITUTE
CONFERENCE IN AUCKLAND The seventh conference of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, and the first to be held in Auckland, will be opened by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, in the University College on July 10. The delegates are to be accorded a civic reception at 11 a.m. and the conference will be officially opened at 11.15. Professor J. C. Sperrin-Johnson will be the lecturer for the Banks lecture, which was inaugurated in 1926, in recognition of the botanical work of Sir Joseph Banks with Captain Cook’s first expedition to New Zealand. The lecture, which will be delivered in the evening, will be on “Two Centuries of Botanical Progress, from Linnaeus to Darwin.” The statement of accounts shows that receipts total £752, including a balance of £275 brought forward and £IOO granted by the Government. The cash balances at the close of the year were £322. One remit calls for consideration of the question of plant registration, and suggests the establishing of a plant registration hoard for the purpose of issuing certificates and awards of merit with respect to new varieties of plants, fruit, etc. The suggestion that the Dominion executive should draw the attention of local bodies to the work being carried out by the Great South Road Beautifying Society, as well as by the Road Beautification Association in England, is contained in another remit.
