LATE-RUNNING TRAINS
MR. COATES COMPLAINS WARNING TO MINISTER (THE SUN’S (Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Friday. The repeated late running of trains was the subject of a complaint by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in the House of Representatives this evening. He claimed that the present Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, was not keeping to the standard set by his predecessors. “There is no need for late trains,” said Mr. Coates, “if trains could be run for two years to timetable, in my judgment there is no need for the times of the journey to be extended. Now, in the last six months, train services have slipped back, and I would remind the Minister that if he allows that to continue there is left immediately an opening for the train’s competitor. I agree that there should be safety first, but I say that can still be observed and trains kept to the timetables shown to be possible during the past two years, in which the number of complaints was very small.”
