Coal Strike Averted
MINERS TO WITHDRAW PICKETS ENGINEDRIVERS WIN I (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. Complete capitulation by the Central Council of the Aliners’ Federation to all the demands of the Enginedrivers’ Association has temporarily averted a general coal strike. Nevertheless, the council has to obtain a satisfactory basis for getting its idle men in the north back, to work speedily before the danger is over. The council recommended the appointment of a special committee to endeavour to suppress mass picketing. It also agreed to appoint a committee of three to investigate the charges of the enginedrivers that their members have been accused of treachery by the miners on the coalfields, because they carried out the instructions of the combined unions to remain at work. Meanwhile, reports from Kurri Kurri disclose that the miners yesterday threatened to picket the colin That district. Strong forces of police from Newcastle were drafted to a secret rendezvous on the coalfields last night, in anticipation of trouble during the week-end. The enginedrivers at Killingworth decided not to haul any more coal. Advices from Brisbane state that Queensland is not likely to be affected by the strike.
