(From Vesterd:<y’s Fn t o Kditioil)
SALE OF CANTERBURY Press Association DUNEDIN, Friday. At the Native Land Court this morning, Mr.- Tuiti Makitanaro. Southern Mao.ri M.P., when dealing with the Ngaitahu tribe claim, which has been the subject of litigation for 80 years, stated that, notwithstanding the Royal Commission’s recommendation of £354,000 to the tribal beneficiaries in compensation for the sale of the Canterbury Province, no Parliament had put this recommendation into force; but now, as a result of strong recommendations to the Native Minister, the Prime Minister had expressed his intention to ask Parliament to appropriate £500,000 as compensation. In a further statement, the member said that proposals were afoot to erect, at a cost of £3,000, probably in Dunedin, a huge carved Maori house.
