MATAMATA NOTES

Mr. J. F. Wells presided over a large attendance of members of the Matamata branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute on Saturday.

A long discussion ensued regarding the tentative proposals for the grading of teachers’ salaries. The meeting approved of the scheme generally but it was decided to forward the following remits in connection with it to the executive:

(1) Salaries of headmasters of district high schools to be on a parity with those paid in secondary schools. (2) The terms “male and female” to Lie eliminated from the proposed scale and “married and single” be substituted.

(3) Also, in relation to No. 2, married women and single teachers with domestic responsibilities to be classified as “married” on their application being approved. (4) Relative efficiency to be assessed as at present.

Discussing the proposed termination of the “remote allowance,” the meeting carried a resolution, “That schools be classified according to relative remoteness and remote allowances be paid to all teachers employed therein in accordance therewith.”

Mr. B. H. Howes was appointed auditor in place of Mr. J. H. O’Halloran, and it was left in the hands of Messrs. Wells and Crocker to arrange the date of the annual meeting.

The Rev. A. C„ Hampton presided over the annual meeting of the Matamata Glee Club.

The chairman congratulated members on concluding a successful season and wished them further successes in the future.

Officers were elected as follows: Conductor, Air. Fielder; secretary, Mr. E. J. Robertson; treasurer. Miss Madill: committee. Alisses Vasey and Brebner, Alessrs. Alelville and Firdlater.
