FRUIT FOR OVERSEAS
AUCKLAND SEASON CLOSED TOTAL OF 82,053 CASES A record consignment of 30,493 cases of apples, shipped on board the steamer Huntingdon, which cleared Auckland last evening, closed the 1928-29 apple export season for the province. During the season 82,053 cases of fruit were shipped at Auckland, making a fresh record for the province. Several new markets were investigated by the Fruit Export Control Board during the season and the result of this is expeted to be shown in an even wider spread in next season’s export consignments. A trial consignment was sent to Rio de Janeiro. Ten cases of passion fruit were sent to the United Kingdom, the board entertaining hopes of building up an overseas demand for New Zealand’s growing surplus of this fruit. The following table gives a list of the places of disposal of the apples exported from Auckland with the amounts and percentage of the total:
A total of 1,672 cases of pears was exported, 1,636 cases being sent to the United Kingdom and six to South America.
