In the Market Place

i APPLES STILL FIRM

LEMON SALES DULL Choice lines of dessert and cooker apples continue to sell on a brisk market, but the demand for pears has slackened noticeably in the past week. Hothouse tomatoes remain dt firm rates. Better class samples of hothouse grapes arc selling exceptionally well. 13ASSION fruit has fallen in value because of the arrival of more supplies from Australia. Lemons are dull of sale, and the market is losing the improved tone apparent for some time past. The inquiry for poo.rman oranges is small, but other lines are bringing good prices. Tomorrow a shipment of citrus fruits will reach Auckland from Australia. The vegetable market is heavily supplied with cabbages, swedes and pumpkins. The country rock at present in the face is much harder, making progress a little slower. Another 50 feet of driving should intersect the first branch of the Reuben Parr reef. ALBURN I A.—The manager reports: The drive north on the main Orlando lode from the crosscut at the winze has been extended six feet, making a total of 132 feet. The reef here averages four feet wide, and is still a strong body of stone, carrying nice mineral antimony and silica. The country rock on both walls is still of a splendid class for making gold. On the crosscut east at the Whau level a stope has been carried along over the back on the level for a length of 20 feet by 8 feet in height. There are four leaders crossing here, averaging from two inches to eight inches wide, and all carrying nice mineral, but no gold was seen. None of these leaders seems to be the one we are looking lor, so I -will clean out the level further ahead to try to find the leader.

OHINEMURI.—The superintendent reports: “In the south section on the No. 3 level the drive south on the main reef has been extended 26 feet, making a total of 252 feet from the main rise. The course of the drive has been altered to intersect the sulphide vein on the eastern side of the reef. In the north section on the No. 4 level the drive on the Silver Queen reef has been extended 44 feet, total 105 feet. The drive is within 10 feet of a point corresponding with No. 1 winze on this reef from No. 3 level. The ore here is of good grade. Operations on the Camoola lode in this section were proved by survey to be on the footwall branch of the lode. A drive has been commenced on the hangingwall section from a point 50 feet south of No. 1 winze and carried along 13 feet. This work has now disclosed sulphide ore running parallel with the drive on the footwall branch. At 140 feet south of No. 1 winze a crosscut exposed a body of quartz, seven feet wide, corresponding with that showing in the main crosscut at No. 3 level. This will be further explored as the hangingwall drive advances. At the mill the work of rivetting tall tanks and preparing for the reception of four tube mills is proceeding satisfactorily. The earthwork on the tramway has been suspended to enable the laying of sleepers and rails.
