CITY RAZED AND ROBBED

BANDIT HORDES DESCEND ON CHINESE TOWN SIX EUROPEANS CAPTURED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SHANGHAI, Sunday. Hordes of bandits descended upon Shekichen, a city in West Honan, about 190 miles north of Hankow. According to reports received at Shanghai through the China Inland Mission, they captured six foreigners and are holding them for ransom. The names of the captives are: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Weller, Mr. and Mrs. John Walker and child, and Miss Brook. The bandits razed the city and massacred hundreds of Chinese. They carried off much loot. The raid was made possible owing to the withdrawal of General Peng Yu-hsiang’s military garrison in view of strategic measures for his forthcoming struggle against the President, Marshal Chiang Kai-shek.
