FIGHTING FINISH
DOMAIN STEEPLECHASE VETERAN WINS SPRINT After a desperately close finish L. V. Clapham won the one and a-half mile ateeplechase at the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club’s fourth winter meeting at the Outer Domain on Saturday. McNiel and Clapham dashed up to the winning post almost level, but the former broke the tape a touch ahead of Clapham. The judge decided to award the race to Clapham as he considered McNiel had “bored him out,” unintentionally, in the final dash. The going was heavier than the previous week, so that the scratch man. Savidan, was well down the list. savidan, however, had the fastest time. 7min 9sec. Gordon Kells’s time was 7min 16 l-ssec. second to that of Savidan, with Cooper, 7min IS 4-ssec. third. The heavy going was also evidenced in the 76yds handicap sprint, where Alf. Clarke romped home winner of the final off the 14Jyd mark. Shot putting and discus throwing events were held also, considerable interest being displayed in both. Following are the results: 75 YARDS SPRINT (Handicap). First Heat R. G. Kirkwood <7Jyds) 1 .1 W.
