DAMAGE IN THE NORTH WATER AT HIKURANGI (From. Our Ou*n ', , WHANG ARE I, Toda*. Ample evidence of the severity of the past storm is evident on ever>side. Workmen are engaged repairing th« stone wall surrounding the town wharf basin, which caved in in several places. The Hikurangi swamp is at present a sheet of water. The danger of Wilson s mine flood, ing was feared, and the miners were called out three days ago. However, they returned to work at midnight on Wednesday. The Hikurangi Coal Company's mine has been abandoned, and tramping operations will not commence until after the winter. Several privately-owned mines sr» flooded out, and it is expected they will experience trouble in obtaining pumping apparatus.
