AN OBSTRUCTIONIST
WING-FORWARD NOT POPULAR “BLOT ON THE GAME” (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Today. The wing- forward received scant praise at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday. Tlie president. Mr. Gi. A. Maddison. described him as an obstructionist and a spoiler, and the chairman oi the Management Committee, Mr. S. S. Dean, referred to him as a blot on the game. Delegates seemed fairly unanimous in a wish to control the wing- forward, general opinion being that lie spoilt open play. A motion to revert to the three-two - three scrum, in order to eliminate the wing- forward, was not proceeded with however, it being pointed out that teams could place their men how they desired. The opinion was stressed, however, that the wing -forward frequently’ carries on illegal activities, and it was decided to recommend referees to deal more strictly with liim in future, in regard to keeping behind the ball in the scrum and obstructing his vis-a-vis.
