Northern Candidates

WINNERS AT WANGANUI Brigadier Bill and Mister Gamp rE outstanding features of yesterday’s racing at Waugantti were the successes of Brigadier Bill and Mister Gamp in the principal jumping events, their form serving to bring them into the limelight for their Great Northern engagements.

Heavy rain for the last two days made the outlook for the opening day of the Wanganui races not promising, but the weather cleared, though a threatening keen and cold wind made conditions rather unpleasant for spectators, of whom there was a good crowd, about equal to last year. The totalisator showed a decrease of £ 1,525, mainly due to the club’s action in not making two races of the Purua Hack, for which the field dwindled down to 19. many of the defections being made by trainers to register their disapproval. The race for the Steeplechase was a good one and Brigadier Bill repeated last year's win in easy style, though had Roman Abbey stood up he might have been in the picture. Mister Gamp scored a very easy win in the Century Hurdles and appeared a most reasonably • handicapped contestant. The wins of Paitonu and Keddar were also easy ones. When Vindication and Scrap Iron fell in the Hack Steeplechase riders S. Anderson and A. Stratton broke collarbones. Purua Hack Ten paraded for the first division of the Purua Hack, while in the second division scratchings reduced the field to nine. Most support come for Propaganda £343. while Second Thought £298, Coolmint £IBB and Warflame £172 also carried a lot of money, with a big drop to the eventual winner of the second division, Flying Binge £129. When the tapes went up for the first division Second Thought failed to take advantage of the rails. Sylvan Bell went to the front. with ‘ Coolmint, Grand Acre and Wine Tray. When they settled down. Grand Acre was in the lead, followed by Wine Tray. Coolmint, Warflame, Sylvan Bell and Wheriuatonga. Crossing the top the only change was that Sylvan Bell improved her position. Grand Acre turned for home ahead of Coolmint, Warflame and Sylvan Bell, but once straightened up Coolmint shot to the front and came on to win with ease by a length. Grand Acre was three lengths away third, just in front of Sylvan Bell, next to finish being Tunbridge, Whenuatonga, Second Thought, Wine Tray, Catuna and Fallow. In the second division Le Champ showed out momentarily, but at the end of a furlong Propaganda was in the lead, followed by Bank Note, St. Melba, Le Champ, Flying Binge, Naselle and Shrewd. As they crossed the top Propaganda was well clear of Bank Note, St. Melba and Le Champ, with Flying Binge nearest of the others. At the straight Propaganda was ahead of Le Champ, Bank Note, St. Melba, Flying Binge and Shrewd, and appeared to have the race well in hand, but inside the distance Flying Binge finished with a great run that landed her past the post a bare head in front of Propaganda. Four lengths away was Shrewd, and next were Le Champ, Bank Note, Royal Acre, St. Melba, Ali Baba and Naselle.

Hack Steeplechase Kapuna £504 and Royal Elm £414 were much better supported than Mountain Crag £230, Highwayman £225 and Maidos £lßl in this event. After they had negotiated the first obstacle, at which Scrap Iron crashed. Royal Elm, Maidos, Vindication. Son o’ Mine, Alaric, Highwayman and Mountain Crag was the order. Vindication fell at the second of the brush double. Bown the back and round the bend into the straight the first time Maidos was the pilot, ahead of Royal Elm, Mountain Crag, Highwayman, Kapuna, Son o’ Mine, Vexatious, Alaric and Ballyfarnon. Maidos had a life at the double brush, where Pikimai came down at the second fence. Across the top Maidos was bowling along clear of Highwayman, Mountain Crag. Royal Elm, Vexatious, Ballyfarnon and Son o’ Mine, and eventually won nicely by a length and a-half from Highwayman, who was a length in front of Royal Elm. There was a gap back to Vexatious, followed by Ballyfarnon, Mountain Crag, Son o’ Mine, Alaric, Trouble and Ratapiko at intervals. Wanganui Steeplechase The nine carded duly paraded for the Wanganui Steeplechase. In a good betting race Roman Abbey £723 was much better backed than Matu £607, and Brigadier Bill £492, with Rangi Sarto £133, neglected. They got away to a splendid start. Rangi Sarto and Roman Abbey racing for the lead at the first obstacle, after jumping which Roman Abbey went to the front, followed by Rangi Sarto, Puwhero, Brigadier Bill, Mandarine, Maunga, Wharncliffe, Nukumai and Matu, the field soon stringing out. Puwhero and Brigadier Bill followed Roman Abbey down the back and into the straight the first time. Maunga crashed at the hencoop, and Roman Abbey came down at the first of the brush double in front of the stands and left Puwhero to pilot Brigadier Bill, Mandarine, Rangi Sarto, Wharncliffe. Nukumai and Matu out of the straight. The next time past the stands Puwhero showed the *way to Brigadier Bill, Rangi Sarto, Nukumai, Wharncliffe, Matu and Mandarine. At the four furlongs Brigadier Bill shot into the lead and headed Puwhero. who was followed by Rangi Sarto. Nukumai and Wharncliffe. Rangi Sarto went up to second crossing the top and followed Brigadier Bill over the hencoop, where the leader pecked slightly, but recovered and won by three lengths, with Rangi Sarto a dozen lengths ahead of Puwhero. The last-named just beat Wharncliffe for third place. Matu and Nukumai were the only others in the picture. Hack Hurdles Of the 14 starters for the Kaitoke I i black Hurdles, Red Bank £672 carried most money, Cybele £412 being the | only other well backed. Gala Bay £164. the eventual winner, being at a double figure price. Coming up the straight Otairi, Paul Lucerne, Gala Bay, Vivo, Grand Lupin, Red Bank, Tiega, Joy King and Ripon Abbey was the n*der. At the six furlongs Otairi and Gala Bay were in front of Paul Lucerne, I Red Bank and Vivo, while the only others in it were Tiega and Ripon Abbey. Gala Bay went to the | front going down the back and piloted j Red Bank, Tiega and Otairi over the penultimate fence, where there was a ! ffap back to Vivo, Paul Lucerne and ! Cybele. Red Bank challenged Gala Bay over the final stages, but failed i by half a length to catch the North - erner. Otairi was six lengths back, j half a length ahead of Tiega, next to finish being Cybele. Vivo, Novar, OverI haul and Paul Lucerne. Century Hurdles j With the scratching of the Waikato I bracket for the Century Hurdles, eight were left. Locarno. £696. was a little | better backed than Mister Gamp, £645.

Airtight., Atareria, and Mister Gamp, !in that order. Bown the back the j second time Comical was still the pilot. I followed by Mister Gamp, Airtight. Atareria, Locarno, and Aberfeldy. 1 Crossing the top. Mister Gamp ran up to Comical, the pair being followed at i intervals by Airtight, Atareria. Loi carno, Beaumont, and Aberfeldy. Mis- : ter Gamp had headed the top-weight jon the turn, and led over the last ! j fence, Locarno and Atareria being! j nearest to Comical. In the run home i ■ Mister Gamp was not troubled to win i by four lengths from Comical, who was i | eight lengths ahead of Atareria and | Locarno, a head separating that pait. j Beaumont and Airtight were next, j Aberfeldy cantering home. Connolly Handicap Even betting marked the Connolly Handicap, Bisox £535) and Ruanui; (£519) being only £SO better backed than Blimp (£488), Atholspear (£427), and Paitonu £410). Ruanui, Goodwill.! Blimp, and Benzora were first to show ; up in the straight, and. passing the ; stands, Benzora, Goodwill. Ruanui. Blimp, Lady Limond, Gold Bag. Atholspear, Paitonu. Ruanui was fourth, and Blimp close up. followed by Gold Bag, Goodwill, Teheka, Kawhakina, Mithra, and Benzora. Borough Handicap There was heavy support for Limited (£752) and Keddar (£667), with Value (£537) and Broad Acre (£412) next in favour. Black Duke was badly left when the tapes went up, Value being first to show out in the dusk, with Bobbin, Limited. Broad Acre, Keddar, First Acre, and Millais following. As they ran across the top. Limited. Ked- I dar, Bobbin, and Broad Acre were together behind Value, and the order on the home turn was much the same. Round the bend into the straight the | leaders ran wide. Keddar came 1 through on the rails to gain a com- j manding lead, which he maintained in the run home, to win by four lengths. ! Limited was second, a neck in front of Broad Acre, who was a similar dis- ! tance ahead of Bobbin. Black B ike I being in the bunch. Value and Joy : Bird were next to finish.
