ONEHUNGA COUNCIL MEETS DRAINAGE LOAN BUSINESS The newly-elected Onehunga Borough Council held its first meeting last evening, the new Mayor, Mr. Edward Morton, presiding. The council elected Mr. P. Lipscombe, W. C. Hill and A. C. Tomkin. Mr. Geraghty was elected chairman. Finance: the Mayor (chairman), Messrs. G. A. McKendrick, F. W. Mountjoy, J. Pilkington, A. C. Tomkin and S. Campling, who has been chairman of the streets committee for the past two years, declined to act on the committee, and Mr. G. A. McKendrick was appointed in his place. Ml*. H. A.' Yockney, the town clerk, reported that he had advertised for objections to the drainage loan and had received none. It was decided to ask authority from the Local Government Loans Board to raise the loan. Mr. F. S. Morton wrote asking that he be relieved of his position on the Transport Board as soon as possible. The meeting considered that Mr. Morton was the best man for the position and decided to ask him to reconsider his decision.

The council agreed to subsidise pound for pound an offer by the Returned Soldiers’ Association of £45 for the employment of ex-soldiers living in the borough. When the estimates for the current year are brought down the council will consider making a grant toward the erection of a building on a section recently'bought by the Onehunga Free Kind rgarten.
