HOOVER DISPLEASED
UNITED STATES NAVY POLICY MISCHIEVOUS REPORTS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, May 4. It is stated that President Hoover is displeased with reports to the effect that the United States Government has changed its attitude on the question of naval armaments because of recent developments at Geneva. It is understood that he regards these reports as having been circulated for mischievous purposes. Officials reiterate that the Government has not abandoned its position in regard to reduction. They assert, that no instructions, or implied instructions. direct or indirect, for such a change have been sent to Mr. Gibson. After further discussion at Geneva, the Preparatory Disarmament Commission. by 22 votes to 2, resolved to reject the system of direep, limitation, and decided that limitation or reduction must be sought by means of publicity of expenditure by the Powers. This will be dealt with in the examining articles in the draft convention already signed. The Chinese and Russian delegates voted against the motion. The Germans abstained from voting.
