TAHITI DELAYED
ARREST OF A STEWARD TROUBLE AT PAPEETE Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. According to a passenger’s story, which is confirmed by the purser, a delay of two hours was suffered by the Tahiti in getting away from Papeete. A steward was arrested by French authorities on a charge of theft, and bail was refused owing to the French law, which requires proof of innocence, as against the British proof of guilt. The stewards demonstrated on the wharf and wanted to go to the gaol to release their comrade, but a French armed guard appeared. The stewards also refused to go aboard the ship, which was held up. However, all ended well, as someone gave proof that the steward was innocent.
