As a young farmer, Jack Symes, was returning from duck shooting on Hatuma Lake yesterday with a companion, James Simmonds, and was stepping out of a boat, Simmonds knocked his gun causing it to explode. Symes received the full charge in the right arm and wrist. He was taken to the Waipukurau Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate the arm below -he elbow.
