RAILWAY DISMISSALS

FIFTY MEN FROM OTAHUHU SURPLUS LABOUR ONLY Fifty of the emergency casual hands employed at the Otahuhu railway workshops received notice during the week that their services were not required after Saturday. On inquiries being madt it was ascertained that all the men dismissed were included in the emergency casual division, whose services are liable to be dispensed with at a minute’s notice. These men were placed on the payroll a short time ago to cope with the shortage of trucks available for the carriage of general cargo. This shortage has now been overtaken, and conditions are again normal at the workshops. None of ,the employees included in the permanent casual, or permanent staffs, was dismissed, and it was authoritatively stated that there is no idea of retrenchment in either of these devisions.

“SIMPLY EMERGENCY CASUALS”

WORKSHOPS MANAGER’S STATEMENT Mr. A. D. F. Samson, manager of the workshops, stated that no permanent hands had been dismissed from the shops. The 50 men who were put off were simply emergency casuals, who were taken on to expedite work in the change over from Newmarket to Otahuhu. "Before they were taken on they were notified that their services were entirely temporary,” Mr. Samson said, and that they were liable to be disposed of at any time. There is no retrenchment in the workshops staff.”
