Opium Smoker Fined Lee Bing, for being- in possession of opium, was fined £25 at the Otaki Police Court. Ah Wong-, for smoking prepared opium, was fined £I3.—F.A. Body in Harbour The body of Frederick Golding, aged 66,. was found this morning in the New Plymouth Harbour. He disappeared from the Newton Xing wharf about 1.30 a.m. on April S. —F.A. Maori Boy’s Death The death of a five-year-old Maori boy, of Otaki. occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital. The lad was admitted suffering from lockjaw. It was considered necessary to inject an anti-tetanus serum, but the body was too rigid. The boy died under an anaesthetic.—P.A. School Ablaze A fire which broke out shortly after 9 o’clock this morning in the Old Grammar School Buildings, Symonds Street, severely damaged a locker before it was extinguished by the City Fire Brigade. The building, which is occupied by the W.E.A. and by the Seddon Memorial Technical College, is insured for £15,250 with the New Zealand Insurance Company. Salesman’s Thefts “Accused has taken down everyone he met,” said the probation officer, of John Herbert Tonking, aged 28, a salesman, who pleaded guilty at Christchurch to 10 charges of theft and false pretences in connection with the sale of cutlery. He was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention. Counsel said the man had been sent out from England by his relatives to pick up in health.—P.A. Stolen Silk In the Wellington Magistrate’s Court Grange and Sons, Ltd., claimed £sl 12s 2d from the Union Steam Ship Company or the Wellington Harbour Board as a result of the disapr pearance of a case of silk transhipped at Sydney into the Maheno. For plaintiff it was stated that the two defendants were being sued as it was not known who was liable for the loss of the case. (Proceeding).—P.A. * * * Bookmaker Fined £35 After pleading guilty to a charge of loitering in High Street, Dannevirke, lor the purposes of betting, William Joseph Donovan, tobacconist, was today fined £35 by Mr. J. Miller, S.M. The police stated that Donovan’s chief business was betting, and they believed he was an agent for a big bookmaker. The magistrate declined to accept the plea of counsel for defendant that Donovan was a silver bettor, in view of the fact that over £SO was found on him after his arrest. Painter’s Shop Ablaze Fire broke out early this morning in the shop of Mr. R. Wooster, paijiter and paperhanger, in Queen Street, Blenheim. The brigade made a good save, although the outbreak occurred close to a large quantity of oils and paints. The contents of the shop were insured for £SOO in the Phoenix Office. The loss is estimated at £IOO. The premises are part of a block of shops owned by Mr. W. C. Nicholson, of Palmerston North, the whole of which was insured for £1,500 with the LonI don and Lancashire Company. Damage to the building is estimated roughly at £SO.—P.A.
