REFUSES TO LICENSE
PERSISTENT OFFENDER FINED £2O OBSTINATE BUS-DRIVER “This man absolutely refuses to take out a licence of any sort, and apparently considers any fines inflicted sufficient to cover the necessary expenses.” said Inspector Clark, of the Manukr.u County, to Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday, when John Paton, of Clevedon, was charged with using a passenger bus without having paid a heavy-traffic licence, and also using the bus without having obtained the necessary licence from the Manukau County Council. Mr. Clark said that Paton had been convicted two months ago, and fines totalling £25 had been inflicted for the same offences. He had warned defendant since then, and he had been absolutely ignored. The bus was in daily use carrying passengers. In convicting Paton, Mr. Levien said that there was only one method by which a man could be put in his place for infringing the law, and abusing the roads, and that was by prosecuting him on every possible occasion. If he used the bus every day, they should prosecute him every day. With twenty chairges against him, he might make an appearance, and it might be possible to knock a bit of reason into him. If that system, however, were carried out, he could not possibly stand it, and he would eventually land in gaol. Fines totalling £ 20-were inflicted, and defendant was ordered to pay Court costs, £l.
