Youth Favoured by Citizen’s Ticket

TIME FOR CHANGES INCOMPLETE LIST In a statement regarding the selected tickets for local body elections, Mr. Albert Spencer, chairman of the Progressive Citizens’ Election Committee, stated to-day that the committee was this year thoroughly representative of all sections of the ratepayers and business community. The sub-committee chosen to select the tickets had' g‘§ie very thoroughly Into the qualifications of the various candidates, and had also reviewed at length the past se.rvices of sitting members. The general feeling among business people seemed to be that the time had come for drastic changes in the personnel of our City Council, and while including the names of sitting councillors who had abundantly proved their worth, the committee had added two others who had previously been members of the council, and eight new candidates whose business training seemed to specially fit them for civic responsibilities. Members of the Citizens’ Committee viewed with alarm the rapidly rising civic expenditure, and felt tts.\t the support of the ratepayers should be ticcorded only to those who would press for reorganisation on business lines, and would oppose increases in the present burdensome rates. Youth, said Mr. Spencer, had been given special consideration, but only where it was allied with special business qualifications, and although the list had omitted the names of several older men who had given faithful service to the city, lie felt sure that citizens generally would approve the selection. The list is at present incomplete, only 15 names having been chosen; the others will be announced after the nominations have closed. The chosen 15 are;—■ CITY COUNCIL Present Councillors: J. A. C.
