ONE-DAY FLIGHT

MOTH FROM CHRISTCHURCH 550 MILES IN EIGHT HOURS A one-day flight from Christchurch to Auckland w r as accomplished yesterday by Major G. A. C. Cowper with Mr. Spencer Mason as passenger in the second Gipsy Moth machine presented to the club by the Government. Only eight hours were spent in the air, while the time for the whole journey of over 550 miles was 10 hours 40 minutes. Although the performance was one seldom accomplished, it was by no means an endurance or speed test, and served to illustrate the great advantages of air travel. The journey was completed without fatigue or discomfort, while the plane travelled at all times with a large reserve of power. Major Cowper landed at the Ihumatao Airdrome shortly after 5 p.m., bringing with him the morning newspapers from Christchurch and a letter of greeting from the Mayor of Christchurch, the Rev. J. K. Archer, to the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. Baildon.-
