FARMERS AND BUDGET
DISCUSSION IN CANADA TWO AMENDMENTS LOST (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) OTTAWA, Thursday. The Conservative opposition moved an amendment to the Budget expressing regret that no provision had been made in it for reasonably safeguarding and protecting the interests of those engaged in agricultural and industrial pursuits. This was defeated in the House of Commons to-day by 62 votes. A sub-amendment moved by the Progressives urged consideration of an immediate and substantial increase in British preference. This was defeated by 136 votes. The Government had a majority of 24 votes on the main Budget motion moved by the Minister of Finance, Mr. J. A. Robb. This was that the House go into committee of ways and means.
