COMMUNITY FOOTBALL. —The 700-year-old custom of playing football in the streets of the town was carried out with vigour and enthusiasm, despite the wintry conditions, at Ashbourne, Derbyshire, on Shrove Tuesday (February 12). The whole village took part in the game, which progressed through streets, lanes and river, the respective goals, two water mills, being three miles apart. The picture shows combatants in the river working the ball down stream in some places the ice was broken to keep the game going. —Sports and General.
