SUSPENDED BY ROPE
| CONTRACTOR BREAKS RIBS HIT BY SHOWER OF STONES Press Association WIT AK AT AN E, Saturday. A painful accident happened to Mr. J. S. McKenzie, the contractor for the road that is being made round the ■ bluff on the road to Galatea. A huge : boulder jutting out from the cliff appeared to bo in danger of fall- * ing and Mr. McKenzie and his brother proceeded to investigate. For this pur- . pose they were suspended by ropes J tied to trees at the top of the cliffs, i The boulder was examined and appeared to be firmly embedded, in the cliff. However, while Mr. McKenzie was standing on it the boulder suddenly broke away and went crashing down to the valley beneath. The rope tied round Mr. McKenzie was loose at the time and he dropped suddenly for some J distance, the sudden jerk braking three of his ribs. The debris above was loosened and for some minutes - Mr. McKenzie was showered with falling stones and was literally bruised l from head to foot. He hauled himself with difficulty up to the top of the I cliff, the process being a most painful L one.
Later he was motored to the Whakatane Hospital, where he is progressing as well as can be expected.
