PUPUKE GOLF CLUB

A keen interest in club affairs was the predominant feature of the annual meeting of the Pupuke Golf Club, held on Friday. The president, Air. F. PL. Alingay, was in the chair. Steady progress during the past year was recorded in the committee’s report. The membership at the end of the season stood at 185, women numbering 97 and men 88. The committee drew attention to the very marked decline in green fees, the amount received for the year being £3B 12s 6d, as against £7O 14s 6d in the previous year. The bank overdraft increased from £4B 0s 8d to £74 14s 2d, but an appreciable improvement in the item, “sundry creditors,” was recorded. Capital expenditure on the ground amounted to £69 5s 8d for the year, while plant accounted for £ll6 2s 6d. BIG EXPENDITURE CONTEMPLATED • During the year the club had engaged Air. Redhead, of Rotorua, to submit a report upon an improved lay-out of lhe links. His design provided for a lengthened course and also eliminated much of the climbing that was now necessary. The minimum expenditure entailed would amount to £BOO, but a sub-corrf-mittee that had investigated the financial side of the scheme recommended that an expenditure of £I,OOO be provided for. the extra amount being for much-needed improvements to the course proper. It was proposed to finance the scheme by the issue to members of debentures bearing interest at 6 per cent. A sinking fund was proposed for the liquidation of the debentures. An increase in subscriptions of one guinea, if the major scheme was adopted, or half a guinea in the event of ex smaller outlay being favoured, was forecasted. After a long discussion a committee was set up to report upon the scheme. Before committing the club to a big outlay upon its leasehold property, the committee will consider the purchasing and layingout of a suitable freehold site for the links. A general meeting of men: %rs will be held within one month to furtner discuss the matter.
