CONCRETE AT NORTHCOTE
COMPLETION OF SECTIONS HIGHWAY TO BIRKENHEAD The concreting of the section of the main highway between the Northcote and Takapuna boroughs was completed last week by the contractors, H. Bray and Co. The section between Northcote and Birkenhead, which the firm also completed, will shortly be opened for traffic. The shoulders of both sections have yet to be formed, but it is expected, with fine weather, to finalise them shortly. The Northcote Borough Council has for some time past been making representations to the Main Highways Board for an increase of the subsidy granted from £1 for £1 to £2 for £l, but nothing definite has been done. The total cost of the completion from the junction of Bake and Onewa Roads, which will link up with these connections, is estimated at £30,000.
The question of submitting loan proposals to the ratepayers was part of the Northcote Council’s policy, but the unavoidable delay in receiving the final reply from the Main Highways Board has led to the proposals being temporarily held up.
