CABLES TOO COSTLY

CANADA TO AUSTRALIA MOVE FOR A REDUCTION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, Friday. Steps are being taken by the Foreign Tradp Bureau of the Board of Trade, in line with Chambers, of Commerce all along the Pacific Coast, to secure a material reduction in the existing exorbitant cable rates to Australia and the Orient, which are declared to be throttling the trade development and intercourse of Canada with the countries across the Pacific.

Mr. Maya D. Hammond, the chairman, reported that the cable rates were higher from Vancouver to Australia than from the United States Pacific ports. Tile bureau intended to see the matter through to a finish.

Protests have been made to the Union Telegraph Company in the United States, which controls one cable. The matter is also being taken up with the Dominion Railway Board, under whose jurisdiction the cables are. Traders are confident of success, as the data shows that, by comparison with the Atlantic, the situation is a heavy handicap to those doing business with Australia.
