MAKING A TRAVELLING BAG
N.Z. HIDES AND TIMBER USED It will come as a surprise to many people to know that most of the fine leather travelling bags and suitcases sold throughout New Zealand are manufactured in Auckland from New Zealand hides and leathers. For hard wear and for smart appearance, New Zealand leather is equal to anything in the world. Messrs. Palmer, Collins and Whittaker, Ltd., travel goods manufacturers, Ponsonby Road, consider New Zealand leather the best possible for their work, and use it exclusively. The same company also uses New Zealand timber exclusively. The timber is used in the making of cabin trunks, for the rounded battens of suit cases, and for other purposes, in all demanding a small woodwork factory with thousands of feet of timber on hand drying. Wherever possible this company uses New Zealand goods for the manufacture of articles for sale to New Zealanders. One of the chief exceptions is fibre, which comes from Sweden and Germany, although it could be made from New Zealand wood pulp.
There appears to be an excellent opening in this direction for a pew local industry, employing the waste of cut-out timber lands in the manufacture of a material for which there is now a large and lasting demand.
