DRAMA AND COMEDY Gunner O’Brien, an old-time pugilist, asks Jim Lambert, fight promoter, to take qare of his daughter when he is gone. Lambert agrees, thinking the girl is a child. She turns out to be eighteen, and Lambert “takes the count” at his heart for her. That is the setting for the comedyromance entitled “Beau Broadway," which is now being shown at the New Regent Theatre. The stars are that inimitable team —Lew Cody and Aileen Pringle-—in a new riot of fun that sets mother mark in sophisticated comedy-drama. Lew Cody, as Lambert, changes his worldly life to rear her in the desirable atmosphere, but Yvonne, an old sweetheart, engineers complications. Finally Lambert prepares to lose liis ward to one of his proteges, but she surprises him by declaring her preference for him, while Yvonne returns to her first sweetheart. George Bancroft, virile star, who will be remembered in the picture, “The Showdown,” as the leader of the gangs, has now turned detective in his latest picture, which is the second attraction at the Regent this week. This picture made by Paramount tells of the detective’s great efforts to stamp out the evils of crime and violence in his city, and of his success. The name of tlio picture is “The Drag Net,” and in the cast are also William Powell and Evelyn Brent. The story has a variety of strong dramatic moments which have been expertly handled by the director, Joseph von Sternberg, and his’ cast, notably George Bancroft. His virile and human performance will have much to do with its definite popular success. Evelyn Brent, too, gives a lino performance.” An excellent supporting programme is also being presented, including a comedy and gazettes of the latest world news. The musical side of the programme is capably handled by Mr. Arthur G. Frost and his Regent Operatic Orchestra.
