UNSATISFACTORY DRAINAGE (From Our Uicn CorrespondentJ HAMILTON, To-day. At the inqucbt before Mr. Wyvern Wilson* coroner, to-day, Alexander iSt. Patrick Jordan, chief warder said that typhoid first appeared in Waikeria in necerober. Seventeen. cases were treated as gastric influenza. Dr. Terry, health officer for the Waikato, and Ur. Royd, of Auckland, had visited the institution since, and analysis had been Lade of the water. Two suspected carriers were also examined, and all returned a negy '.i\ c. All the patients and staff were inoculated on January 7. Logie first reported sick on December 25 and asked to toy down. Ho was examined by the doctor the next day, tyid sent to the hospital, on December 27. The cause o£ the outbreak was not ascertained. MOST VIRULENT CASE pr. M. N. Hoc kin, medical superinteiidtnt at the Waikato tlospital said hat Logie told him he had been feeling unwell for TO days before reporting >u:k. His chances of recovery were hus prejudiced and he died last evening from toxemia and heart failure, -rje doctor added that this was the most virulent case he had seen. John P. Terry. Inspector of Health, in answer to the coroner, said the drainage system at Waikeria was not entirely satisfactory. Waste was mostly carried in an open drain, and nightsoil was buried in a pit 200 yards from the buildings. Hhis department had recommended a septic-tank being installed. The coroner, in returning his verdict Mid that in view of the Health Denarement’s recommendation he would not add a rider. He found that Logie died in the Waikato Hospital from toiemia and heart failure following typhoid.
