Melba Entertains
Homecoming Dinner and Musical Evening GREAT ENTHUSIASM (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Heed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Dame Nellie Melba had a brilliant home-coming dinner, and subsequently a musical evening, at her West End residence, which was previously owned by the Duchess of Argyll. The guests assembled in the antiquedecorated drawing room. They included the Earl and Countess of Abingdon, Sir Max and Lady Muller, Lady Byng, Lady Warrender, Captain and Mrs. Feakes, Lord Richard Nevill. The drawing room was a scintillating scene when Melba, in a perfect voice, sang three numbers. Harold Craxton was her accompanist. Miss Danielli, from Australia, sang delightfully. Dame Nellie, who was garbed in crimson, weafting magnificent diamonds and pearls, inspired overwhelming enthusiasm. She was greeted with cries of “You’re wonderful.” “Maybe,” replied Melba, “but only because I keep on studying and working always. Good-night! God bless you all!”
