RECENT LONDON SALE HUGE SUM REALISED LONDON, December 17. Details of the recent sale of paintings by the old masters and others at Christie’s rooms show that many records were broken. The total sum realised was £145,745. Reynold’s “Fourth Viscountess Townsbend,” and the Van Dyck “Genoese Officer’’ went for 12,500 guineas each. A Titian portrait of Daniello Barbara realised 7,20.0 guineas, and Zoffany’s picture of Sir William Young’s family, which probably will go to America, 7,036 guineas. Turner drawings brought a total of 21,904 guineas, ranging from 2,400 to 7,900 guineas each. A Romney portrait of Mrs. Warren sold for 5.500 guineas, and four Canaietta oil paintings of Venetian scenes brought a total of 24,700 guineas, ranging from 100 to 6,400 guineas each. The Canaletto pictures were originally sold for £ 40. Sotheby’s secured for £7,000 the tapestry panels “Toilet of Venus,” which the Russian basso Chaliapin was compelled to sell, owing to his losses in Russia.
