Workers on Block in Town of France ANCIENT CUSTOM (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.20 a.m. ST. ETIENNE, Wed. The annual farm-labour auction, held here in accordance with the ancient custom, illustrated forcibly France’s labour shortage. Only a dozen farm labourers and shepherds were put on the block, and there were eight bidders for every one offered. Girl shepherds hardly over 13 years of age brought 3,000 francs each for a year’s labour, plus two new dresses. Adult farm hands brought from 4,000 to 5,000 francs, with extra inducements. The auction presented the usual colourful scene. Tradition permits that every year on the day after Christmas farm workers dissatisfied with their jobs may try their luck in the market.
