Defying the Weather

TENNIS IN THE RAIN N.Z. Championships Begin AFTER a day and a-half’s postponement the Xew Zealand lawn tennis championships began in the face of a blustering and rain-laden northerly to-day.

Mr. Murray Kean, the manager, decided to take a gamble with the weather at noon, and at 12.15 Morrison, Eden and Epsom's champion, faced R. P. Adams (Wellington) in the first match of the tourney. It was unispired, Morrison winning in straight sets.

The courts were slow and slippery, and light rain was falling at intervals —hardly tennis conditions. By 1 p.m. there were five matches in play, and the tennis was nothing to write about. The “gate” was a poor and straggling one, but it appreciated the covered stand, which was just ready in time for the tournament. Shoe nets came into use before long and some players abandoned their shoes altogether and slid about in their stockinged feet, several startling acrobatic exhibitions being given. Only one player, Rhodes Williams, of Wellington, used a steel racket. Results: MEN’S SINGLES Five advantage sets. Holder; G. Ollivier (Canterbury). First Round—M. M. Morrison (Auckland) beat R. P. Adams (Wellington), 6 — o. 6 — l, 6 — 2. W. J. Melody (Wellington) beat W. Blakey (Auckland), o—3, 6—4, 6—l. L. T. Pickmere (Wliangarei), beat R. V. Bundle (Wellington). 6—o, 6—o, 6—2. T.
