FORCED TO “DRY UP”

WET SENATOR OUTWITTED HOUSE SPRINGS SURPRISE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON. Thursday. Something in the nature of a joke was played to-day on Mr. W. C. Bruce, Democrat member for Maryland, who is believed to be “wet.” Mr. Bruce, on the basis of a statement made by Mr. J. M. Doran. Chief Prohibition Commissioner, asked for an appropriation of £54.000,000 for Prohibition, which the Senate promptly passed, in order to prevent delay in the debate which Mr. Bruce was reday to precipitate, to discuss the fallacies of Prohibition. Mr. Bruce was thus cheated of the opportunity to talk, but it is certain that the £54,000.000 will be rejected when the measure comes up in conference -with the House of Representatives.
