GIRLS LEAVING SCHOOL

STAY NOT LONG ENOUGH Reference to the number of girls leaving school without completing any course" was made by Miss A. C. Morrison. headmistress at the Epsom Girls’ Grammar School prize-giving last evening. "The reason most commonly offered is that of necessity, the girls’ earnings being needed in their homes,” said Miss Morrison. "Sometimes I wonder if the necessity is real, or if parents are too easily giving way to the frequent desire of young people for change and novelty. It certainly is a great pity for a girl to begin a number of secondary subjects and soon after to drop them without having acquired sufficient grasp of any of them for practical use, though no doubt she has profited to some extent by the mental training involved. I would again urge parents to give their girls at least two years with us—four years, if possible, so as to reach the Matriculation standard.”
