A NEW SIRE
BARALONG A STAYER SON OF GALLOPER LIGHT Negotiations by Mr. Percy Miller, of Sydney, for the purchase of the English thoroughbred Baralong have been completed, and in due course the fash-ionably-bred and well-performed son of Galloper Bight and Silesia will be installed at the “Kia-Ora” (N.S.W.) stud in company with the other sires Magpie (imp.), Saltash (imp.), Begionaire (imp.) and Spelthorne (imp.). Such an array of blood can scarcely fail to meet the desires of the most ambitious and painstaking breeder. Baralong has been very lightly raced. Ho won three good races, and all his placings were from a mile to two miles, so that he may be classed as a stayer. Baralong is a bay horse, bred in 1924, his dam Silesia being by Spearmint (a son of Carbine and Maid of the Mint) from Galicia by Galopin (Vedette —Flying r Duchess) from Isoletta by Isonomy (Sterling—lsola Bella) from Bady Muncagter by Muncaster. This branch of the No. 10 family is generally recognised as being one of the best in the Stud Book. Related to My Dear Baralong is a. half-brother to My Dear, winner of the Oaks, and dam of Caravel (imp.), whose yearlings at the last sales commanded great respect. His dam Silesia is a half-sister to Bayardo and Lemberg, and his granddam Galicia, is a half-sister to the dam of Aleppo, winner of the Ascot Cup and Chester Cup, and to the dam of Queen’s Square, winner of the Goodwood Cup. His sixth dam Borealis is also interesting, since she is a half-sister to Blair Athol, winner of the Derby and St. Beger, being from Blink Bonnie, winner of the Derby and Oaks. Further back Baralong has descended from a famous mare Queen Mary, ancestress of Hampton. Caller Ou, Sir Bevys, Perola, and others of note. Galloper Bight had a very short career at the stud, but was eminently successful, siring among other good winners. Beam, winner of the Oaks last season. He also got Whirlwind, who is now standing at Otahuhu. Galloper Bight is by Sunstar (Sundridge —Doris) from Santa Fina by St. Frusquin (St. Simon—lsabel) from Grig by Grafton from Merrie Bassie by Rothedhill. The death of his breeder and nominator (Mr. Beopold de Rothschild) precluded him from starting in the English classics, but that he must have played an important part in the Derby is indicated by the fact that he was taken to France, where he won the Grand Prix de Paris in good style. His dam, Santa Fina, is a half-sister to St. Anton (imp.), whose record in Aus- j tralia is well known.
