POPULAR EXCURSION

TROTTING AT CLAUDELANDS WAIKATO CLUB’S CARNIVAL KEEN CONTESTS ANTICIPATED THE Waikato Trotting Club’s one-day December fixture comes up for decision at Claudelamds to-morrow, when a splendid programme will be submitted. As usual with trotting functions at Hamilton, class is well represented, and the numerical strength of the fields will tend to make the difficult work of the “solutionists” even more difficult.

The Waikato Trotting Club has for a number of years enjoyed the distinction of being one of the most progressive country organisations, not only in the Auckland Province, but in the Dominion, and its popularity with owners and trainers can only be accounted for by the fact that excellent and enterprising management has made its presence felt in a most beneficial and appreciable degree. The card which comes up for submission to-morrow is quite in keet>ing with the traditions of this progressive body, and everything points to the 1928 December carnival being one of the most interesting and successful yet held by Hamilton light-harness enthusiasts. The fields will be large, with class well represented, and handicapper C. E. Gooseman has given backers something to think about in their endeavours to find the ultimate dividend-payers. The attractive and interesting schedule will be opened with the 12.15 INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP

j elect of the square-gaiters take the track for the ! 3.10 ‘ HAMILTON HANDICAP Of £250; 2 miles; 4.46 limit.

j The field is not strong numerically but there is a good class of trotter engaged and a keen contest is assured. The limit quartette are a likely lot and Anseline, if ready for the fight, will be one of the toughest propositions. Sebisca has consistentcy to recommend him, while Gold Sovereign has gone two good races over 12 furlongs this year, and if he can see the journey out will be a nuisance to his opponents. Floraline only needs to have had the right work to make his chances of success extremely generous off the front, and all things being equal the Florizel gelding will be one of the fancies. Old age will not stop Wimmera King from having a say in the argument, but Raima reads well on a 4.42 mark, although he has nothing the best of it, while Peter McKinney will be on his home track. Mutu on recent essays is in form and Tradesman will keep them going all the way. Rose Bingen may not be back to form yet, so the public will want Raima and Floraline. The second leg of the double will then attract attention and there will be a lot of interest taken in the parade for the 3.50 STEWARDS’ HANDICAP

Wild Downs . Lt Don Zolock . 60 This presents a field of improving square-gaiters, and while the class generally is mediocre, there is sufficient interest to make for a keen contest, and give speculators plenty of choice, as they appear an even lot. Of the front contingent the best known are Akenehi, Wild Downs, Carwood, Cervine, Carberly and Great Way, and it would not be surprising to find the winner hidden here. Akenehi on reputation may be favourite, but the fact that Cervine is now trained by Jim Bullock will bring the ex-Napier gelding into favour. Carberly is a possibility and Carwood is one likely to upset calculations, while if Wild Downs has made the improvement anticipated, he will be a nuisance. Great Way is the pick of the front line and only requires to go right to show them the way home. Further back Paradigm looks the best, but Peter Brown and Colonel Thorpe are a likely pair. When the public decision is made it may favour Great Way and Paradigm. The novice and improving pacers will then parade for the 12.55 FRANKTON HANDICAP Of £160: 12( miles: 3.37 limit

Some classy milers are engaged here, with a few slippery customers on the end and in close attendance. Off the limit is Pitaroa, who only wants to hop away correctly to give those behind him the hardest part to do. Bingen King has a lot in his favour, if he has been properly catered for before leaving Gisborne, while the day Cornelian decides to take it on properly, the opposition will be kept scratching. Uncle Bert is coming back and off a 2.17 peg will dispute the issue, but can he beat Master Huia, who has raced consistently of late and shown promise? If Hal Chimes should elect to go right it might not be a race, while Bord Nepean has the chance of a lifetime. Stanmoor is a possibility, but the Day-time-Joybird bracket will be very tough and either of the pair will make things decidedly interesting. If Daytime fails in his earlier essay the McMillan bracket will be a tall order, but Bingen King will have plenty of friends. In the absence of the former Pitaroa may be next choice. The mingled element will be presented for the next event, when the free-legged pacers will try conclusions with the square-gaiters in the 4.30 PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of £170; 2 miles; 4.50 limit.

A good field of promising pacers will be seen under silk in this event, and the rearguard contains one or two with sound performances in their favour. Off the front is Vanity Boy, whose Whangarei achievements make him a hard one to displace in the run to the judge. Profiteer has never been so well let in for years and there is every chance that he might win. Nella Dillon will be handy for a good part of the journey, but may be better suited by a shorter distance later. Zealous has a winning record at Te Aroha and if right will be a tough nut to crack. Chrystal, if he hops out smartly, will give the others something to do. Bell Dial is meeting quite a lot of the runners on much improved terms and this will be in her favour, while Rolfe Audubon, on his Great Northern Derby performance, is the pick of the basket and will take a power of beating if he gets a good run. Of those further back the unreliable Richore, and the improved Dealer look to have splendid prospects but the public will no doubt want Rolfe Audubon and Vanity Boy. Decks will then be cleared for the great event of the day. This is the

In the vast majority of cases these unlioppled contests have been wpn by straight out trotters, although there have been a few rare occasions on which the pacers untrammelled, have proved their superiority. In this instance four of the usually strapped up division in llohoro, Regret, Bell Dial and Trustworthy, will tackle some solid trotters, of whom Roma Bingen, Gold Star, Wild Nut, Seblsca, Backiewood and Floraline will prove a formidable opposing force. Roma Bingen and Gold Star fought out the issue of a similar contest at Claudelands last March, and they may have a say in the settlement of the present debate. When last seen at Epsom, Gold Star was far from right, and may have not made sufficient improvement in the interval. Roma Bingen was recently stopped in her work, but will doubtless run a good race. Wild Nut will have a good chance, while Backiewood, providing he can see out the journey, will be tough. Anseline also has a show, but the trotters may be overshadowed by Trustworthy, particularly if the pace is not on in the early stages. "When the public get busy they may want Trustworthy and Lackiewood. but in the absence of the latter Wild Nut will find favour. The way will then be paved for speculators to make an effort to solve the “recovery” stakes, known on the card as the 5.15 VISITORS’ HANDICAP

This event is reviewed at length in another column, and has already been the subject of a special article in The Sun. It is a hard race to solve, but if Daytime is a starter he is going to make things awkward. His toughest opponent should be Laplander, but if the Daytime people reserve him for a later heat, Nelson Tasker will be accorded solid support. After the excitement of the big two mile go, comes a more quiet event over the same distance, the

2.30 CLAU DELAN DS HAN DICAP Of £150; 2 miles; 4.44 limit.

The majority are oft’ the rront in this event and it should be here ihat the winner’s banner will be unfurled. If Explosion is the pacer he was considered to be just a year ago, then he will be able to put the opposition in tlie shade. Lady Barrington is a proved stayer and must be respected, while Nelson Billon i;*" a possibility in this class. Medusa is a tine mare but has to prove her worth at two miles, while Bad’s Hope and Moko Chief possess sufficient speed if in the humour. Cliilde Audubon is erratic, but this will not stop him from winning if he has a day on, while Andover only requires to be A 1 at Kelly’s to have a chance second to none. Cornelian has not yet done enough to entitle her to the supposition she will win, while Ribbonwood’s Last, if he is far enough advanced may prove equal to upsettling general calculations. Explosion will be favourite, but. there will be strong support for Medusa (if started) or in her absence Lady Barrington. Pacers will have* a spell, while the

Practically the largest held of the day will be in evidence here, and the solution of the problem is far from easy. Brackets such as ExplosionRichore, and Bonny Bingen-AVarspite-Gold Treasure will claim attention, and the Corrigan pair will be sure to receive solid support. Profiteer is well treated and if ho has a day on should get a portion of the stake. Halgana has a chance, but the slight interruption in her work since Otahuhu will no doubt affect her. If Nella Billon is in capable hands she will be the hardest to dispose of, while Chrystal and Haerangi Pai only need to go right to be in at the finish. Enawah, if ready, would be in a class by herself, and Marionette went a surprisingly good go at Epsom recently. A useful trio in Cliilde Audubon. Nelson Billon and Medusa are in the next street and the latter, providing she gets a good passage, will be one of the toughest in the race. When finalised favourites may be Medusa and Corrigan bracket, with good support for Enawah in the absence of the others, should they incur penalties.
