AUSTRALIAN EX-SERVICEMEN FIGURES NOW EXPLAINED SYDNEY, Wednesday. In amplifying his comments on the deaths of Australian soldiers since the war, which were put at 60,000, Mr. W. Stagg, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ League of New South Wales, says the Repatriation Department merely records deaths officially recognised as being due to war service, which number 21,281. Mr. Stagg explains that his figures included ex-soldiers whose pensions claims were refused. together with those who had not bothered to apply for pensions, among whom there were easily 6,000 deaths since the war.
