TWO GIRLS DROWNED
HEROIC EFFORT IN VAIN Reed. Noon. MELBOURNE, To-day. Violet Lewis, aged eight, and Aileen Lacey, aged 10, were caught in a strong undertow, carried out to sea and drowned at South Melbourne beach. Two others were saved. Harry Prest, a life-saver, after strenuous efforts brought one girl ashore, but the efforts to revive her failed. The body of the other victim was later washed ashore.
