XMAS MUSIC

Choral Society to Sing “The Messiah” ANNUAL PERFORMANCE The advent of the Christmas season will be heralded by the Auckland Choral Society on Thursday, December 13, when the society’s 75th annual performance of “The Messiah” will be given. Since April 13, 1742, when Handel’s sublime oratorio was first sung to a Dublin audience, to that “generous and polite nation,” as he termed the Irish people, down to the present age, “The Messiah” has been held in the highest esteem by the English-speak-ing races. Without it indeed Christmas would seem incomplete. For this occasion the Choral Society’s ranks will be augmented by members of the Royal Male Choir, and the result should be chorus work of excellent quality. The soloists will be Miss Alma McGruer, soprano; Miss Beryl Smith, contralto; Mr. Birrell O’Malley, tenor; and Mr. Frank Sutherland, bass. Mr. Colin Muston will conduct and Mr. Maughan Barnett will be the organist.
