An enjoyable one-day run is to Kare kare or Piha, two fine beaches on the West Coast. The route lies through Avondale and Glen Eden, leaving the main road by turning to the left after passing through Glen Eden, continuing oast Oratia school and crossing the bridge, before climbing steadily up to the Nihotapu Post Office. Keep straight ahead—the turn off goes to Te Waha—and continue on until another junction is reached. The road to the right goes to Piha, and that to the left to Karekare. Good camping spots. Distance from Auckland, about 25 miles. It is not advisable to go over this road after very wet weather.
