BERIBERI STRIKES SHIP ON WAY TO AUCKLAND
ONE OF CREW DEADCAPTAIN FORCED TO CALL AT MELBOURNE (United P A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) Kecrl. 11 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. The Finnish ship Olive Bank arrived en route to Auckland from St. Pierre, with a cargo of phosphates. The whole crew of 27 was suffering more or less from beriberi, rendering management, of the ship difficult. One man died after the ship anchored inside Port Philip Heads, the captain having decided, in his desperate situation, to make for Melbourne to obtain fresh provisions. Beriberi is a disease chiefly prevalent in Eastern Asia, the Philippine Islands, the Malay Archipelago, the West Indies, and parts of South America. It affects principally the nervous system. An acute form exists which may cause death within a few days owing to the heart being involved. The cause is unknown, but the view most widely accepted attributes the disease to some deficiency in food.
